Everyday Recycling

Building Management will provide disposable cardboard under-desk recycle waste boxes upon request. Please designate any other waste baskets as recycle waste with a clear sign and the nightly janitorial staff will dispose of them properly.

What follows are commonly asked questions about recycling in our building:

  • What can be recycled?

    Paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, metals, food waste and batteries.

  • Do I have to separate the different kinds of waste we recycle?

    We separate out recycling, compostable waste, and batteries. All recycling on our properties is ‘commingled,’ which means that all the different types of recyclable waste, such as paper, plastic, cardboard, glass and plastic, leaves the facility together. Compostable food waste is separated out in its own bins in all tenant suites and leaves the building separately. Batteries must be kept in a separate container, and we will recycle these on e-waste event days.

    New tenants are provided with waste and recycling containers upon move-in. Tenants may also order new or additional recycling containers through our on-line Service Request System and there is no additional fee.
  • How is the recycling collected?

    Your janitorial staff takes the recyclables down to the recycling bins in our garage, where they are mixed together. Food waste and batteries are kept separated.

  • What about cardboard?

    Please flatten all cardboard boxes and place them in one of the recycling containers. If you can’t place them in the recycling containers, then stack them somewhere that will be visible for janitorial with a note taped to the stack that says “Recycle / Reciclaje.”

    If you have an unusually large amount of cardboard recycling, please contact the Building Management Office.

  • What about items that have food or liquid contamination?

    Paper, plastic, metal and glass containers that have food and liquid can be recycled. However, ALL food and liquid needs to be thoroughly rinsed from the items before placing them in the appropriate recycling container in the break rooms to avoid attracting pests. Please scrape all food waste into food waste bins before rinsing and placing the items in the recycling containers.

Types of Waste Containers

  • Recycling (Blue) Containers:

    Typically placed at individual workstations, in copy rooms and kitchens, and in other tenant areas such as conference rooms. They are emptied each night by our janitorial staff. You may deposit any recyclable item into these containers – paper, glass, metal, or hard plastic. Everything is sorted by our janitorial staff, so there is no need for tenants to sort their own recyclable materials. Please empty your cans and bottles, and rinse out food containers before recycling. Paper needs to be clean in order for it to be recyclable, so paper soaked with food or soda will be tossed into the landfill.

    Remember: if you can crumple a piece of plastic in your hand, it’s not recyclable!

  • Compost (Green) Containers:

    Typically placed in kitchens and break rooms. They are emptied each night by our janitorial staff. If tenants wish to have compost containers at each workstation, they will need to empty these themselves in a centrally-located container. Otherwise, the janitorial staff will treat the waste as landfill (they do not collect desk-side compost).

  • Landfill (Black) Containers:

    Typically placed at each workstation and in central locations within a tenant’s suite. The use of caddies for workstation recycling is strongly encouraged. These attach to the recycling container, and their smaller size encourages minimal landfill waste.

Our goal is to divert 75% of our landfill waste to recycling and/or compost by the end of 2016. A higher diversion rate is great for the environment, and it lowers our refuse bill – a savings that’s ultimately passed back to you. Key Center is currently at a 55% diversion rate, so we’ll need everyone’s participation to boost that up to 75%!

Recycling Durable Goods

Kilroy Realty facilitates the reduction of waste and toxins generated from the use of durable goods by building occupants through its recycling program. The term “durable goods” refers to higher-cost-per-unit materials that are replaced infrequently and/or may require capital outlays to purchase. These products may include, but are not limited to: office equipment (such as computers, monitors, printers, copiers, fax machines), appliances (refrigerators, dishwashers, water coolers), external power adaptors, and televisions.

Electronic wastes are filled with heavy metals that are environmentally damaging to extract, and pollute air and water when disposed of in incinerators or landfills. The Building Management team targets at least two e-waste collection events per year. We ensure that our e-waste providers are processing our electronic waste domestically and not shipping it abroad, a common practice that causes significant environmental and health problems.

Our goal is that at least 75% of the durable goods originally intended for disposal at either a landfill or incinerator be diverted through recycling.
